Your Acupuncture Treatment
Acupuncture is the process of stimulating acupuncture points, located on various “channels”, or
pathways over the entire body. Acupuncture is most often painless and even undetected by the
patient (many times it is even reported by patients that it feels “very good”). The needles are
sterile and for single use only.
Your Acupuncture session will last 75 minutes, from the time that you begin filling out
paperwork (if you are new patient), to the time that they are removed and you are off of the table,
checked out and ready to leave.
Upon arrival as a new patient, you will be offered tea and made comfortable inside the treatment room. Then you will fill out paperwork, which usually takes about 10-15 minutes. When you are finished, Becky will discuss this information with you, as well as get a more detailed picture of your main concerns that have brought you to the office.
Then you will be asked to lie on your back on the treatment table, fully dressed, while Becky takes your pulses (all done on your wrist area) and examines your tongue briefly. (The room and treatment table are heated to your comfort). Becky will develop a treatment plan for the session and ask you to adjust your clothing as necessary, giving you proper draping as she steps out of the room for you to get situated (as if you were going to receive a therapeutic massage). She will then return when you are ready and begin the session.
Needles will go in gently, and at a rate that is comfortable for you. Pain is NOT the objective. In fact, chances are that you will feel nothing at all, or pleasant sensations. Becky utilizes the rate of your relaxed breath to insert the needles, and this process generally lasts about 5-10 minutes. You will then be left to relax with the needles in for about 20-30 minutes, depending on the nature of your session (some are shorter, some are longer). There will be gentle music playing softly in the background (unless you prefer to have it turned off), and the goal is for you to be as comfortable as possible during this time.
The needles will then be removed, which usually takes about 5 minutes. You will be left to get dressed at your own pace and come across the hall to the Office, where you will obtain any herbs prescriptions and pay for your session.
